SAFETY EQUIPMENT (TRANSPORT CANADA REQUIREMENTS)

  • PFD for each person
  • Throw bag (min. 15metre buoyant heaving line)
  • Whistle on pfd
  • Bailer
  • Light (if travelling at night)

SAFETY EQUIPMENT (RCABC RECOMMENDED)

  • Painters (ropes) for each end of canoe (floating polypropylene, 9-12mm diameter)
  • Spare paddle
  • Drybag for waterproofing gear
  • First Aid
  • Map & Compass (especially in remote or unfamiliar location)
  • Repair kit
  • Thermos of hot liquid for cold weather/water conditions
  • Stove
  • Fire starting kit
  • Headlamp
  • Knife
  • Kneeling pad for kneeling in canoe

RIVER CANOEING GEAR AND PREPARATION

  • Properly outfitted river canoe
  • Helmet
  • Good Footwear and gloves
  • Wetsuit or drysuit (for most BC river conditions)
  • Flotation for canoe
  • Wrap kit (webbing slings, carabiners, pulleys, prusik loops, folding saw)
  • Throwbag with river grade rope
  • Knife on pfd or in pocket

PERSONAL GEAR

  • Immersion Clothing (wetsuit, drysuit, etc) if risk is determined
  • Spare change of clothing for each person
  • Sun and rain protection
  • Medications or personal needs
  • Garbage bag
