CLUB LIABILITY INSURANCE COVERAGE
Liability coverage is available to Canoe Clubs with a current RCABC membership- including their executives, members, leaders and volunteers. Insurance is valid only for RCABC sanctioned activities. See the Club Trip Sactioning Guidelines to view the requirements. The current costs, maximum liability coverage and other details can be found on the Club Membership Form.
The overall cost is based on a:
- club membership fee ($25 as of 2014)
- cost per member of the club (roughly $8.77 as of 2015)
- a 10% processing fee
Insurance is mandatory for each person in a member club. There is “General Liability Insurance” coverage to $2,000,000 for the CLUB members engaging in ‘approved’ paddling activities. The insurance also includes ‘Errors and Omissions Liability’ for the Executive members of each club for $1,000.000. The cost is about $10 per person per year (as of 2014). Do not count club members that are also RCABC members, as RCABC members are already insured under this policy.

RCABC is taking a co-operative approach to paying for insurance. The cost is shared between clubs and RCABC instructor members. Each person in a club has an equal share and each RCABC instructor has an equal share. If the number of clubs or club members increases, the cost goes down per person. The base cost is a $25 membership fee. Contact the treasurer for quotes on insurance costs for clubs.
The club has to have a club membership with RCABC and to purchase the insurance coverage. The club trip must follow the sanctioning guidelines. A club trip schedule must be determined and advertised in advance.
Yes, this is a requirement for sanctioning purposes. The club must create and provide a waiver to release the club and RCABC from liability.

The sanctioning guidelines include all canoeing activities including all open canoeing, C1 and C2 up to and including grade 3 whitewater. Club sanctioning guidelines also include whitewater kayaks, recreational and sea kayaks and other craft.
No. Trips must be scheduled and leaders must be assigned in advance, otherwise they are deemed non-sanctioned or approved, and therefore not covered by the insurance policy.
Clubs need to keep yearly records of who is on their executive, who their trip leaders are, the number of members they have, trip schedule. This will be very important information in the case of any legal action. Incidents that lead to injury or death need to have detailed records recorded by trip leaders.
- Canoe guiding or any other non-sanctioned RCBAC activity.

“AGMs” and “awards banquets” are covered when alcohol is present. Regarding club trips, alcohol cannot be consumed immediately before or during any on water activities. Trip leaders, to the best of their ability, should not allow people on club trips who have been consuming alcohol or illegal drugs. See the Club Trip Sanctioning Guidelines for more details.
If a vehicle is rented under the name of the RCABC (with an RCABC credit card), it’s covered; otherwise, vehicles are your personal responsibility. Considering that RCABC has never done this and has no plans to begin, effectively there is no coverage coming and going to events.
